The coastline city of Alassio has a public space which is dedicated to various types of public events. Due to its high elevation with respect to the bathers along the coastline beaches, the Partigiani Square can present itself as a real type of “terrace overlooking the sea”, a unique feature for this city and its residents.
Within the defined plans of this rectangular base which measures approximately 1400 square meters of surface space, there are very few changes in the elevation of the square and also very few examples of materials other than colombino stone. The exception can be found in the podium which is reachable by a small series of steps and in particular on the wooden filling of the podium and of the platform in front. The finishing options are dependent upon the type of arenaria stone which was selected.
The variations in the stone pavement indicate divergent functions of the square. These various techniques include the placement of the stone, the form and shape of the stone and the unique surface treatment. These characteristics permit one to identify distinct areas of the square that are designated for different types of activities, such as a walking pathway, the area which surrounds the podium area and the hotel space which can be found in front of the podium. Utilizing traditional measurements of a width of four centimeters and a length which is double with respect to the width, the colombino stone which is lined on the surface, and of a pointed shape, permits one to interpret the area they are placed as the walking path. It also provides the observer a sense of a dynamic movement. The border is placed in a different manner with veined slabs which are laid lengthwise. They have a uniform width of 30 centimeters and a length which is variable. The joints of the wooden panels of the platform are inserted with softened edges. The platform of the podium is surrounded with a similar border but with two additional rectangular bases. Near the entrance of the hotel one has the opportunity to observe a checkerboard pattern which is created with slabs which are larger in dimension with respect to the slabs utilized in the actual square. In conclusion, the five steps which raise the podium are made from colombino stone which is lined on the surface and juxtaposes the step from the backboard to provide the effect of shade.
