Studio Farini a Pianoro

Giorgio Farini

Bologna

An architect who appreciates simple, yet noble materials of our traditions; a peaceful oasis in the Bolognese countryside; an old farmhouse which has magically found new, identity, Giorgio Farini has transformed what was a simple rustic warehouse into his studio. For he who has been creating welcoming architectural designs for over 20 years, the task of designing his own personal refuge, couldn't have been anything less than a labor of love. An expert in the techniques of restoration and renovation, Farini made stone, wood and iron the critical elements for the construction of his space. Therefore it is no surprise that they can be found throughout this structure. The desire to conserve the placement of the external walls worked hand in hand with the desire to modify the experience between the external and internal, which resulted in the choice to transform one of the principal external walls to a completely transparent one. In this way, the landscape seizes to be the context of the home, but becomes part of the architecture itself. The relationship with nature becomes paramount: the countryside enters into the internal spaces with the determined strength of its panorama, full of color and emotion.
The remainder of the structure is comprised of stone and aluminum. The metallic profiles meet the transparent surfaces with irregular forms that enhance the minimalism of the composite solution. Where the structure closes from the external environment, Italian grey sandstone (pietra serena) is placed to create the profile, which provides a strong sense of use of materials. Although the surface is opaque it does not lose its sense of lightness, thanks to the use of an extremely smooth texture.
The color is one which was requested by Arch. Farini and was studied and created for the grey sandstone by Il Casone. It created a technique to darken the stone in order to accentuate the contrast of the glass. The large grey strips recall strong emotions to the appearance of the structure. The result is a structure full of emotion: for its beauty and simplicity, for its dramatic contrasts and strengths of light. Even the distribution of the internal spaces mirrors the project's philosophy, by providing solutions that enhance the functionality of the large spaces, while reserving a cozier environment for the bedrooms.
