Raffaele De Ferrari Square is located in the heart of the historic center, however it is not aligned with the coastline of the Tyrrhenian Sea which envelopes the city of Genoa. It is a crucial point from which to access all parts of the old town. It is at this point where one may find a raised circular platform from which one might and observe the movements of city below. Within this platform structure, a fountain graces the center. It is of large dimension and the water component provides a dynamic background. Around this fountain one may observe a variety of types of geometrical shapes which distinguish the various areas around the fountain. These sectors are comprised at times of small square elements and at other moments include large rectangular slabs. The irregular edges and surfaces gracefully express the age of the stone.
The center of the circular monument enhanced by the playful movements of water from the fountain, was once protected along the two principal sides of the square with raised elements, and now, is protected by the stone borders and soft gradations of the level in the new project. The circular form is accentuated by the repeated concentric rings which travel from the perimeter to the center and is crowned by the historical fountain. Each of these rings created in colombino stone have a rough texture to the touch and are accentuated by various small elements which are square in shape, and dark in color. It is these darker elements which are the only unique objects within the general design. These touches provide a strong expressive reaction and their geometric features contrast the concentric rings. They enlarge the containing border with regards to the rings in colombino stone and characterize the area designated as a pathway which runs along the perimeter of the platform.
Against the central ring which contains the historic basin, the colombino stone is raised and becomes a circular continuous sitting area which offers a pleasant place for a passerby to relax by the water. The choice of stone, the material and the color creates a perfect sense of harmony with the historical architecture around it.
