“From nest to shell” is the name of the idea that emerged in 2007 as a result of the collaboration between Ottagono and SUN, aimed at encouraging design projects for the often-neglected field of outside furnishings. The formula adopted enables designers to think of an innovative product and, at the same time, immediately embark on the prototype production phase thanks to direct collaboration with the manufacturers.
In 2010, the theme of natural materials was chosen.
In this context, IL CASONE is helping to produce the “Serene Horizons” prototype, developing the theme of “stone in holiday and leisure settings”, under the project guidance and artistic supervision of Luca Scacchetti.
“Serene Horizons” is conceived as a system of benches, lights, rubbish bins, bicycle racks, flower boxes, leaflet holders and fountains, composed of a continuous series of IL CASONE Pietra Extraforte (Extra-Strong Stone) slabs of varying thickness and size - thick, medium, thin, tall and slim, low and wide - laid horizontally or vertically.
Each piece has a tongue and groove, so that further units can be added to achieve an uninterrupted line of benches, for example, or a series of different pieces - bench and then fountain, followed by a light, a notice board, a high stool, wall or partition.
“This system offers a practically infinite number of ways of combining pieces,” comments Luca Scacchetti, “not only with different shapes but also using Pietra Extraforte, with a variety of finishes, ranging from smooth, iridescent, hand-chiselled, picked, or bush-hammered, to damask, brocade, silk-finish, or hand tooled.”
Used in its various finishes, Pietra Extraforte provides a kaleidoscope of shapes, functions and infinite shades of grey for a new, contemporary use of our public spaces, where functionality is important, but aesthetic considerations and comfort have equal value.
